10 July 2024 Book Releases I Can't Wait to Read
Thrillers, Romance, Fantasy, Science Fiction, and so much more!
Hello friends,
We’re ringing in a new month with 10 more fabulous releases that I’m bursting at the seams to read. Below we have a good mix of romances and mystery/thrillers, plus some genres outside of my wheelhouse. So, grab a mug of steaming coffee, get cozy, and say goodbye to the money in your account (oops).
A Darker Mischief by Derek Milman
(Young Adult) Mystery | Horror — July 2, 2024
“A boarding school thriller about a queer teen from Mississippi who finds himself swept into a world of old money, privilege, and the secret society at the heart of it all.”
— 💳💥💳💥💳💥💳💥 Sign me right on up!!!!!! First of all, I’m enamored by this cover omg. The shadowy figures in the background, the castle-like architecture, the half mask on one of the character. This is what I want every YA mystery/horror to emulate. Second, I’m a sucker for boarding schools and most especially boarding schools with secret societies. I love reading stories like this during the summer.

One Year Ago in Spain by Evelyn Skye
(Adult) Romance | Contemporary | Magical Realism — July 30, 2024
“A woman must woo her lover’s soul back into his body to wake him from a coma—or risk losing him forever.”
— A gut-wrenching love story is a love story that I must read. Honestly, I’ve seen the amnesia trope before and it usually ends up being the same thing with very few creative being able to twist the story uniquely. I think this one has some promise to it. If nothing else, the cover is beautiful and I have a feeling I’m going to swoon, cry, and yearn for a trip to Spain.

Take Me Home by Melanie Sweeney
(Adult) Romance | Contemporary | Chick Lit — July 9, 2024
“Road Trip No bad music. No detours. No falling in love.”
— You guys are no strangers to my love of small town romances which means this book was instantly added to my never-ending TBR. Road Trips, coffee shops, he falls first, small towns, frenemies, ONLY ONE BED! Ladies and gentlemen, this is a recipe for perfection.

The Book of Elsewhere by Keanu Reeves and China Miéville
(Adult) Science Fiction | Fantasy | Horror — July 23, 2024
“She said, We needed a tool. So I asked the gods. There have always been whispers. Legends. The warrior who cannot be killed. Who’s seen a thousand civilizations rise and fall. He has had many names: Unute, Child of Lightning, Death himself. These days, he’s known simply as “B.” And he wants to be able to die.”
— Uhhh.. Keanu, what are you doing here? I was shocked when I found out that this phenomenal actor is also a freaking writer!!!! Apparently he’s written a ton of poetry and comic books… WHAT?

Catalina by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio
(Adult) Literary Fiction | Historical Fiction — July 23, 2024
“A year in the life of the unforgettable Catalina Ituralde, a wickedly wry and heartbreakingly vulnerable student at an elite college, forced to navigate an opaque past, an uncertain future, tragedies on two continents, and the tantalizing possibilities of love and freedom”
— I wouldn’t consider myself a historical fiction reader or even a literary fiction reader. For the most part I stick to thrillers and romances, so this book is a bit outside of my comfort zone. I think what drew me to this is that I’m able to relate to a certain extent. I wasn’t born in America and I’m not a part of the “elites”, so the fear and insecurities of being able to provide for your family or “making it” that Catalina battles with are etched in my heart. I read somewhere that this writing is more of a stream of consciousness rather than a chronological story. Which seems very fitting for a book like this.

On the Bright Side by Anna Sortino
(Young Adult) Romance | Contemporary — July 2, 2024
“Ellie’s Deaf boarding school just shut down, forcing her to leave the place she considered home and return to her hearing family. Back in a mainstream school, Ellie quickly becomes the subject of hateful rumors. That’s when her guidance counselor pairs her with Jackson, a student who’s supposed to help her adjust. Can the boy who tries to say the right things, and gets it all wrong, be the lifeline Ellie needs?”
— The premise behind this story sounds beautiful. As many of you know, I love American Sign Language and I love learning about Deaf culture. I’m excited to see how Ellie and Jackson’s relationship blossoms and what they learn about themselves along the way.

The Design of Us by Sajni Patel
(Adult) Romance — July 16, 2024
“One impulsive lie leads to a weeklong adventure of fake dating for two bickering coworkers in this swoony destination wedding rom-com.”
— First things first, this cover art is stunning! I love the vibrant colors and it’s screaming luxury vacation to me. I’ve never heard of this author before, however, this short synopsis encompasses what I’ve been craving lately.

The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Mystery | Thriller | Fantasy — July 30, 2024 (The Grandest Game #1)
“Seven tickets. An island of dreams. The chance of a lifetime. Welcome to the Grandest Game, an annual competition run by billionaire Avery Grambs and the four infamous Hawthorne brothers, whose family fortune she inherited. Designed to give anyone a shot at fame and fortune, this year’s game requires one of seven golden tickets to enter. With millions on the line, those seven players will do whatever it takes to win.”
— Willy Wonka, anyone? I loved The Inheritance Games when I read it a couple years ago so I’m super excited to dive into this world again but with a different take. I’m curious to see if Barnes will keep some of the side characters from the original series or if we’ll have similar riddles to the ones Avery had to figure out.

Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell
Mystery | Thriller — July 4, 2024 (Marvel Crime #1)
“The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK. The twins don’t act like themselves, and they now have flawless skin, have lost their distinctive tics and habits, and keep talking about a girl named Belle. Amber insists her children have been replaced by something horrible, something “perfect.”
— Immediately yes. Marvel and I are like peanut butter and jelly, chocolate and croissants, pepperoni and bacon (am I hungry?). We simply belong together the way soulmates are tied to each other. And now you’re telling me I get a Jessica Jones retelling and IT’S A SERIES???? and tell me if I’m wrong but…. is there some Twilight mixed in here as well??

What Have You Done? by Shari Lapena
(adult) Mystery | Thriller | Suspense — July 30, 2024
“The teenagers get their kicks telling ghost stories in the old graveyard. The parents trust their kids will arrive home safe from school. Everyone knows everyone. Curtains rarely twitch. Front doors are left unlocked. But Diana Brewer isn’t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer. Nothing ever happens in sleepy little Fairhill, Vermont. But this morning that will change. And one innocent question could be deadly. What have you done?”
— Truthfully, I love everything about what’s being promised in this story. Again, small town!!!!!!!! and mystery!!! I haven’t even picked this up yet and I’m already theorizing who could’ve killed Diana.
