Finally got around to watching Murder Mystery 2! I had a fun night on Friday rewatching the first and then immediately starting the second.
Murder Mystery 1 follows Nick and Audrey Spitz as they take a trip to Europe for their anniversary. Unfortunately, this vacation isn’t what they were expecting as they’re framed for murder and on the run. But will they uncover the mystery before the police catch up to them?
I completely forgot how funny and cozy this film was. The comedic timing is spot on and the cast has such a wonderful dynamic. First of all, Aniston and Sandler are such a phenomenal pair. I wholeheartedly love them together just as much as I love him with Barrymore. (BTW I’m so here for a love triangle rom-com between the three of them.)
It was so cute to me that she’s a fan of cozy mysteries (just like me) and it’s what helps her figure out who killed who and why. The plot was great. I, too, wish to meet an extremely rich man who takes my husband and I on a yacht for free. The development of the mystery flowed perfectly from the first murder all the way to uncovering whodunit. It made me want to have my own murder mystery party — minus the actual dead bodies of course.
Side note: It shocked me that Luke Evans was in this, I completely forgot he played Charles. He’s AMAZING. He did such a beautiful job in Fast & Furious 6 as well as Beauty & The Beast so I was ecstatic when I saw him on my screen.
The first film is definitely a 5 star watch for me. I was belly laughing at the comedy and intensely following along.
Murder Mystery 2 picks up a little after the first with Nick and Audrey starting their own private eye business. Unfortunately it’s not working out for them and actually straining their marriage. They decide it’s the perfect time to escape to a private island where their friend, The Maharajah, is set to be married. Only they find themselves with another mystery as Maharajah gets kidnapped during the celebration.
I gotta be honest, this film was okay. It didn’t give me the same feels as the first one. I still thought it was great and cozy, but I don’t think it’s as watchable as the first.
The comedy was good but definitely not the same. It felt like there weren’t many moments for comedy to shine because it was replaced by action sequences. The plot was a little strange for me as I didn’t feel it made much sense or was as perfectly put together as the first. For me, Murder Mystery gave off such murder mystery party vibes and it felt like we were actually working towards uncovering this crazy secret. This time around, it just didn’t give what the first film gave. The kidnapping was alright but I wanted more murder mystery party vibes and less kidnap for ransom vibes.
The characters also lacked the dynamic that was shared in the first film. When I watched Murder Mystery, I could easily identify each character as “the actress” or “the racer” or “the colonel”. This film didn’t have that. What it did have was annoying Arturo from La Casa De Papel who I graciously gave an eye roll to every time he came on screen. And yes, he’s as annoying and creepy as he is in Money Heist.
I will say that the action sequences were a lot of fun and I still loved Aniston and Sandlers relationship in this sequel. I just wish we had more murder mystery vibes in this one. I ended up rating this 3.5 stars because it was underdeveloped for me.
Anyways in conclusion, I need Hollywood to develop more comedic murder mysteries starring Aniston and Sandler. Now I’m off to watch more S&A/B rom-coms!
With love & a cup of coffee,
